Srikandi Lestari Foundation and Regional Forestry Forum Work Together Preventing Illegal Logging and Promoting Forest Preservation in North Sumatra Province

MEDAN – the North Sumatra Regional Forestry Council (DKD SU) held a public dialogue for environmental conservation efforts, this activity received full support from the Srikandi Lestari Foundation (YSL).

This was conveyed directly by Dewi Hairani, YSL Program Manager, while attending a public dialogue at the North Sumatra Department of Environment and Forestry (DLHK) Hall, Jalan Sisingamangaraja Km 5.5, No. 14, Marindal, Medan sandpaper. Tuesday (14/01/2025).

“Supporting penug and ready to synergize with the North Sumatra Regional Forestry Forum and with various government agencies to encourage forest preservation, especially mangrove forests and protected forests, and prevent illegal logging in this province,” said Dewi.

Not only that, Dewi also explained strategies that can be done to avoid and minimize the impact of illegal logging and deforestation.

According to him, the development of sustainable ecotourism in mangrove and protected forest areas can increase public awareness and participation.

For him, education and training are also important strategies to minimize illegal logging and deforestation.

“Provide training and education to local communities on the importance of forest preservation and the impact of illegal logging,” he said.

Dewi, has three strategies to be adopted by the government in order to minimize illegal logging and deforestation. In addition to the development of ecotourism and education and training, he also advises on community-based forest management.

“Developing forest management that involves local communities in decision-making and management of forest resources,” he said.

In line with that, Dewi emphasized the importance of partnership and collaboration between the government, environmental organizations, and communities that receive the impact of forest destruction.

“The government can cooperate with environmental organizations in developing forest conservation policies and programs, it must also involve local communities for the decision-making process and forest management,” said Dewi.

This activity presented Yuliani Siregar (head of lhk of North Sumatra province), Apri Dwi Sumarah (head of Social Forestry and Environmental Partnership), Panut Hadisiswoyo (Chairman of FKD North Sumatra), Roganda Simanjuntak (representative of Indigenous Peoples), and private sector representatives.
